For Blurppy’s second Poster Posse Project I wanted to bring in some new talent to compliment the Original 8 members. I was fortunate enough to come across Erin Gallagher’s work and was excited when she jumped on board. (She must have had fun because she is also on board for our third Poster Posse Project!) Blurppy welcomes this NYC artist to the Poster Posse and is excited to share her very first interview with you…the fans.

BLURPPY- How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?
EG – I suppose I’ve always been trying to, but only recently got involved in an actual scene. I grew up with three older brothers who read comic books and watched a lot of sci-fi/fantasy/action, and I used to copy trading cards and comic book covers with them, or draw characters I made up (that were always very similar to the X-Men). After school I had been working on illustrations that were kind of on the peripheral of pop culture, but struggling a bit to get comfortable with my work. Recently I began screen printing again, and suddenly realized there was a whole poster art scene happening, along with the pop culture gallery scene, which hadn’t yet come to NYC – but I wanted in.
BLURPPY – Your timing is perfect. Seems as if the “pop culture gallery scene” is getting bigger and bigger each and every day. Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?
EG – I am a full time freelance artist. In my branding I bill myself as a “multi-faceted illustrator and designer” which maybe could come off as a humble brag. I choose to represent myself that way because in the illustration world, you’re sometimes told to fit all of your work in a small box. You’re told that for a good reason – so that your work is easily recognizable – but whenever I tried to do it I failed. I realized that I just have to stop trying to squeeze myself in and do what comes naturally, and it happens to be a wide variety of work – that I feel still has the same sensibility. So the short answer is I do artwork full time, but it includes a wide range: gallery work, branding, lettering, tee shirt design, custom wedding invites, comics and murals.
Peace Love and Juice – Erin Gallagher
BLURPPY – There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with “options”. Whose work do you admire or collect?
EG – Ah, that’s a tough one. There are so many talented people working right now, in the poster scene and beyond. Just a few (and I’m going to feel bad for not mentioning everyone!) are Kevin Tong, Mike Mitchell, Marcos Chin, Becky Cloonan, Alice X. Zhang, Matt Ferguson, Jessica Hisch, Kevin Wada, Olly Moss, Kyle Fewell, Phil Noto, Ming Doyle, Chris Garofalo…I could go on and on.
BLURPPY – I always love that question because it invariably turns me on to new artists. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?
Rogue’s Gallery – Olly Moss
EG – I think I’d say the Olly Moss Rogue’s Gallery prints. They are so incredibly simple, yet they pack such a punch because they’re also clever – that’s just what Olly Moss does.
BLURPPY – Besides the words “talented” and “creative” I think “clever” is a perfect way to describe Moss’ work. I can’t get enough of his stuff. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?
EG – I think it’s important to look outside “the scene” for inspiration. Look at classic art or other things all together. It may sound cheesy, but inspiration is everywhere, and work can benefit greatly from absorbing it. At the same time I think work suffers if you are too insular in what you take in.
Turner And Hooch – Erin Gallagher
BLURPPY – Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream gig?
EG – Another hard-hitting question! I think one of my dream jobs would be to be commissioned for a Pearl Jam gig poster. PJ is my all-time favorite band, so that would be incredible – though I know I’d have an initial freak out if it were to happen.
BLURPPY – Hey, anything can happen! JJ Abrams just sent a personal letter to another member of the Poster Posse, Paul Shipper praising his Star Trek prints so you never know! DREAM BIG! If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?
EG – I’ve only ever wanted to work as an artist, so it’s hard to say. Basically I would want to be Tony Bourdain.
BLURPPY – Ahhhh, a foodie/ travel fanatic, I see, I see. You should come out to SDCC, we have TONS of great eats. What movies are you excited to see this year?
Star Trek: Into Darkness – Erin Gallagher
EG – Obviously Star Trek Into Darkness! I still have to see Iron Man 3 – I was traveling when it came out. And I am very excited for Man of Steel – I think it’s going to renew the public’s love of Superman. I’m looking forward to Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing – I’m kind of a Shakespeare nerd and you can’t beat that cast! It already came out, but I really want to see Danny Boyle’s Trance. Others: Only God Forgives, Monsters U, Pacific Rim, The Wolverine, The World’s End, Don Jon…there’s a lot of good stuff this year!
BLURPPY – There really is a ton of great flicks coming out. It’s been a long time since there were this many “must-see” movies in the pipeline. I also agree with you about Man of Steel. Every time I see a trailer, featurette, behind the scenes photo, I get sucked in. I am REALLY looking forward to that one. I can’t WAIT to see what Mondo does with it. (Stay tuned, we will let you know as soon as Mondo lets US know!) What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?
EG – About 5 minutes after I finish a piece I find problems with it…but I guess if I had to choose it’d be “You Were There for Me”, my Buffy the Vampire Slayer-Spike inspired print. It was for my first show at Bottleneck Gallery. I really love the characters, I like the mood of the piece a lot, and I it was a smooth printing process (I do my own screen printing, so a difficult time can color how I feel about a piece).
You Were There For Me – Erin Gallagher
BLURPPY – Joe is doing fantastic things over at Bottleneck Gallery. I would LOVE to visit or even collaborate with him on a Poster Posse Project some day. What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?
EG – I suppose my pet peeve would be the “collector-ablity” of popular artists – which is not the fault of the artists themselves. I feel that it can sometimes leave other talented artist out, or sometimes force popular artists to get stuck in a stylistic rut, for fear of alienating collectors. But I have to say, the poster/gallery artists I’ve encountered in-person or online, are some of the sweetest most supportive people out there. I don’t think I’d be doing this interview without getting support and promotions from other artists online, which in this kind of business is really amazing and admirable.
BLURPPY – Did you just coin a new word? “Collector-ability“? What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?
EG – Again, I’m going to reiterate how supportive and inclusive the artists I’ve “met” have been. It’s such a great feeling to not be competing, but get propped up and listened to and helped by fellow artists. That’s definitely the best part – the spirit of community.

- Erin Gallagher
BLURPPY – I know that the Poster Posse does an amazing job supporting each other. You are such a talented, grateful, personable group of artists, so I totally know what you are talking about. What was your most embarrassing moment?
EG – Well, that would have to be handing in just a few prints (when I promised 40) to a gallery about an hour before a show was opening (a very highly anticipated show) because the rest had been ruined in a screen printing mishap. That did not feel good. Thankfully they hung up what I gave them and let me reprint my work and hand it in a week later. Whew!
BLURPPY – OOPS! That’s not too bad though. If THAT is your most embarrassing experience then I would say you are doing pretty good. What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?
EG – This is my first interview! And I think the best question was “How do you keep things fresh”.
BLURPPY - Well alright then, thanks. I will keep that one in the line up for the next round of interviews with Poster Posse Project #3. What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”
EG – I’m going to finally finish my shiny new website. I have a Mad Men-inspired print that I’ve been wanting to finish for a while, so I’m excited to get that done. I’m doing some branding for an amazing NYC hair stylist. I’ll be working on some new tee shirt designs for BQT Shirts. I’ve been working on my next pieces for Bottleneck Gallery. And I’m sure there will be more besides all that – stay tuned!

BQT Shirt Designs – Erin Gallagher
Ok, here are 10 quick questions…GO!
-DC or Marvel?
Ahhh, I grew up reading Marvel, but definitely enjoyed some of DC’s stuff when I got older. Both!
-Most Desired Super Power?
Heat vision…although I’d probably get into way too much trouble with that one.
-Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?
You can’t beat Han. He’s so charming, and so sarcastic. I love that combo.
-Best movie snack?
At home I like to make my own popcorn – my new fave is with melted butter and vanilla salt. At the theater I like popcorn without butter, but with salt and M&M’s, so they get kinda melty. Mmmmm.
-Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?
I loved Thundercats, Reading Rainbow, Star Trek TNG, the Simpsons, and Batman the Animated Series. (Can you tell it’s hard for me to pick one favorite anything?)
-What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?
Since my main website is still being worked on, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr are all updated frequently. Instagram’s good too, if you also like pics of adorable cats (I have three) and the occasional food/drink pic.
-What’s your favorite pop culture event?
I enjoy going to comic cons, but I mostly stick to the artists alley – the big shows can get really overwhelming.
-Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)
Another favorite – so tough! I may have to say Buffy. She’s a pretty amazing character, and I love that they’ve kept her (and the whole Buffyverse) going in the comics. She can be super tough, but she can also be vulnerable and I love that Whedon put her (and the other Buffy characters) through the ringer with fantastical problems as well as real world problems. I have to mention another, so I’ll say Dream from the Sandman. I love his character’s arc, and his ultimate transformation through death.
-Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars?
Happy. He’s a pretty smart guy! He’ll do something interesting with it, and I think he’s fully capable of keeping it very much in the “Star Wars” universe.
-Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel?
I love Star Wars, but I’m going to have to say Blade Runner on this one. The Blade Runner aesthetic really appeals to me, and I picture having a lot of fun working on it.
So, let’s recap, what have we learned about NYC’s Erin Gallagher? She likes to keep her work options “open“, not being pigeonholed into one thing. She digs Olly Moss which, when it comes right down to it, is a no-brainer. She has a strong desire to work with Pearl Jam, adores cats and loves scoundrels, specifically, Hans Solo.
Blurppy would like to thank Erin for her time on our second Poster Posse Project and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with for round 3!
