I just received my set of Olly Moss Rogue Gallery of Villains doodles and couldn’t be happier.  Now I see that he has been busy this weekend with some extracurricular activities. First up he did some dinnerware designs.  Yep, I said “dinnerware

-olly500I had some downtime so I decided to make myself a new set of dinnerware based on The Willow Pattern.” – Olly Moss

-OLLYMOSSThese are extremely cool and personally, I would LOVE to serve Thanksgiving Dinner on them.  Next up Mr. Moss was dabbling in the gaming universe.  He posted a couple of pictures on INSTAGRAM showing some ManQuest powerups.

Screen Shot 2013-02-17 at 11.09.36 AMScreen Shot 2013-02-17 at 11.10.04 AMI love these and I think I see a vague resemblance to Zach Galifianakis in here.    I wonder how long before we see a major video game company step up and employ this artist/gamer for some serious video game collaborating.  I love the work he did when he redesigned the covers for his favorite video games.

omvideogamesKuddos to you Mr. Moss for raising the bar once again.  Follow Olly on TWITTER, check out his WEBSITE and check in on his BLOG and jump over to his INSTAGRAM feed.

It’s no secret that artist Olly Moss loves video games.  He worked with Sony doing the box art for Resistance 3 and also did a set of Videogame Classics Posters where he recreated classic video game covers as if they were Penguin Classics books.  Olly even reached out to his fans recently asking for gaming suggestions for his new iPad mini.  Speaking of which, I wonder what games he decided to go with?

-0resistance_3_box_artollymossvideogameclassicsNow Olly has done a couple of prints for the ever so popular gaming podcast, A Life Well WastedRobert Ashley is a freelance journalist, aspiring radio producer and musician as well as the host of the show which he does from Athens, GA.  As his website says, A Life Well Wasted is an”internet radio show about video games and the people who love them.“  The topics covered range from vintage pinball museums to interviews with cosplay enthusiasts and to speaking with the guy who owns the rights to Tetris and hearing his plans to save the world.

Olly has designed the following posters for the show of which I am hoping he will be a guest on at some point.  He cleverly uses the Sonic race course as his background and let’s one of Sonic’s golden rings help form with word WORK.  Check them out and then take a quick look at the animated gif he created about the process for the posters.

Screen Shot 2013-04-02 at 9.23.55 AMI’m not sure how YOU did during March Madness but my bracket was… a freakin’ shambles.  Now, Nerdlocker has embarked on the impossible, they are letting fans determine the just which Mondo print is the most popular of all-time.  I have a hard time deciding what I want for lunch and NOW I have to chose between all my favorite pop culture icons and crown one the king?

mondo address

Over the next 6 months, a total of 7 brackets will be featured with polls running every Monday through Friday. The prints with the most votes will advance to the next round. Once the top two prints are determined for each year, those prints will enter one final bracket, the highly coveted, Champions Bracket. To make things even more interesting, these two prints will be joined with four wild card prints to be determined based on their overall number of votes.

-0-Bracket-EAST2Voting for the first round of the 2012 bracket is now live. The prints are featured above and below and I have to say, this first one was tough.  There are SO many amazing prints by incredible artists you feel like you have to betray one each time you cast a vote. (How could I ever vote AGAINST Jock, Ansin or Moss?)  Your votes can be placed HERE.

Screen Shot 2013-04-02 at 9.42.16 AMAfter much deliberation, I have completed my first bracket.  Tears were shed, apologies were sent.  That being said, I feel that my choices were just and warranted.  Head over to Nerdlocker to fill out YOUR bracket and see just how tough it truly is.  Leave a comment below and let me know which print YOU think will be crowned the champion when all is said and done.

P.S.  CURSE YOU NERDLOCKER!  I had to chose between TOM WHALEN and MARTIN ANSIN, DREW STRUZAN and MARTIN ANSIN, JOCK and MARTIN ANSIN?  NOT… FAIR!

Olly Moss Works On Marvel’s “Thor:The Dark World” Wrap Gifts And Gets Paid With His Very Own Mjolnir!

olly-moss-thorArtists sometimes get commissioned by studios to do exclusive, limited edition prints for upcoming movies that the studio then gives to the cast and crew as a memento or “thank you” for services rendered.  Well it appears that my suspicions were true, Olly Moss’s work is worthy of the Gods.  Olly was approached by Craig Kyle and Kevin Feige to come up with some images for the cast of  Thor: The Dark World and as usual, his work looks incredible.  He customized each print for each key member of the cast and my head is spinning thinking how great this entire set would look on my walls. (Sorry, selfish thought there.  I should have said “fans walls“.) Take a gander at the prints and then see how Marvel bestowed the might of Thor’s hammer to him as payment.  My question is two-fold, will we EVER be able to get our hands on these lovely prints and if Olly throws the hammer, does it come back to him…?

olly-moss-thor-2Here is what Moss had to say about the project on his TUMBLR page:  “Earlier last year, I was invited by Craig Kyle and Kevin Feige to make their wrap-gift for the cast and crew of Thor: The Dark World.   Here’s the thingie I did. Each principal cast member had their own character on their poster.   And they paid me with a real Mjolnir!”

Artist Interview: Erin Gallagher Is A Cat Loving, Olly Moss Admiring NYC Artist Who Has A Penchant For Making Up Words

For Blurppy’s second Poster Posse Project I wanted to bring in some new talent to compliment the Original 8 members.  I was fortunate enough to come across Erin Gallagher’s work and was excited when she jumped on board.  (She must have had fun because she is also on board for our third Poster Posse Project!)  Blurppy welcomes this NYC artist to the Poster Posse and is excited to share her very first interview with you…the fans.

BLURPPY- How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

EGI suppose I’ve always been trying to, but only recently got involved in an actual scene. I grew up with three older brothers who read comic books and watched a lot of sci-fi/fantasy/action, and I used to copy trading cards and comic book covers with them, or draw characters I made up (that were always very similar to the X-Men). After school I had been working on illustrations that were kind of on the peripheral of pop culture, but struggling a bit to get comfortable with my work. Recently I began screen printing again, and suddenly realized there was a whole poster art scene happening, along with the pop culture gallery scene, which hadn’t yet come to NYC – but I wanted in.

BLURPPY – Your timing is perfect.  Seems as if the “pop culture gallery scene” is getting bigger and bigger each and every day.  Is art your full time job?  If not, what else do you do?

EGI am a full time freelance artist. In my branding I bill myself as a “multi-faceted illustrator and designer” which maybe could come off as a humble brag. I choose to represent myself that way because in the illustration world, you’re sometimes told to fit all of your work in a small box. You’re told that for a good reason – so that your work is easily recognizable – but whenever I tried to do it I failed. I realized that I just have to stop trying to squeeze myself in and do what comes naturally, and it happens to be a wide variety of work – that I feel still has the same sensibility. So the short answer is I do artwork full time, but it includes a wide range: gallery work, branding, lettering, tee shirt design, custom wedding invites, comics and murals.

peacelovejuice_color_webPeace Love and Juice – Erin Gallagher

BLURPPY – There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with “options”.  Whose work do you admire or collect?

EGAh, that’s a tough one. There are so many talented people working right now, in the poster scene and beyond. Just a few (and I’m going to feel bad for not mentioning everyone!) are Kevin Tong, Mike Mitchell, Marcos Chin, Becky Cloonan, Alice X. Zhang, Matt Ferguson, Jessica Hisch, Kevin Wada, Olly Moss, Kyle Fewell, Phil Noto, Ming Doyle, Chris Garofalo…I could go on and on.

BLURPPY – I always love that question because it invariably turns me on to new artists. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

Olly-Moss-Rogues-GalleryRogue’s Gallery – Olly Moss

EGI think I’d say the Olly Moss Rogue’s Gallery prints. They are so incredibly simple, yet they pack such a punch because they’re also clever – that’s just what Olly Moss does.

BLURPPY – Besides the words “talented” and “creative” I think “clever” is a perfect way to describe Moss’ work.  I can’t get enough of his stuff.  With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

EGI think it’s important to look outside “the scene” for inspiration. Look at classic art or other things all together. It may sound cheesy, but inspiration is everywhere, and work can benefit greatly from absorbing it. At the same time I think work suffers if you are too insular in what you take in.

TurnerAndHooch_COLOR_onlyTurner And Hooch – Erin Gallagher

BLURPPY – Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream gig?

EGAnother hard-hitting question! I think one of my dream jobs would be to be commissioned for a Pearl Jam gig poster. PJ is my all-time favorite band, so that would be incredible – though I know I’d have an initial freak out if it were to happen.

BLURPPY – Hey, anything can happen!  JJ Abrams just sent a personal letter to another member of the Poster Posse, Paul Shipper praising his Star Trek prints so you never know!  DREAM BIG!  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

EGI’ve only ever wanted to work as an artist, so it’s hard to say. Basically I would want to be Tony Bourdain.

BLURPPY – Ahhhh, a foodie/ travel fanatic, I see, I see.  You should come out to SDCC, we have TONS of great eats. What movies are you excited to see this year?

intodarkness_finalart_type_haiStar Trek: Into Darkness – Erin Gallagher

EGObviously Star Trek Into Darkness! I still have to see Iron Man 3 – I was traveling when it came out. And I am very excited for Man of Steel – I think it’s going to renew the public’s love of Superman. I’m looking forward to Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing – I’m kind of a Shakespeare nerd and you can’t beat that cast! It already came out, but I really want to see Danny Boyle’s Trance. Others: Only God Forgives, Monsters U, Pacific Rim, The Wolverine, The World’s End, Don Jon…there’s a lot of good stuff this year!

BLURPPY – There really is a ton of great flicks coming out.  It’s been a long time since there were this many “must-see” movies in the pipeline.  I also agree with you about Man of Steel.  Every time I see a trailer, featurette, behind the scenes photo, I get sucked in.  I am REALLY looking forward to that one. I can’t WAIT to see what Mondo does with it.  (Stay tuned, we will let you know as soon as Mondo lets US know!) What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

EGAbout 5 minutes after I finish a piece I find problems with it…but I guess if I had to choose it’d be “You Were There for Me”, my Buffy the Vampire Slayer-Spike inspired print. It was for my first show at Bottleneck Gallery. I really love the characters, I like the mood of the piece a lot, and I it was a smooth printing process (I do my own screen printing, so a difficult time can color how I feel about a piece).

YouWereThereWithMe_HAInewsYou Were There For Me – Erin Gallagher

BLURPPY – Joe is doing fantastic things over at Bottleneck Gallery.  I would LOVE to visit  or even collaborate with him on a Poster Posse Project some day. What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

EGI suppose my pet peeve would be the “collector-ablity” of popular artists – which is not the fault of the artists themselves. I feel that it can sometimes leave other talented artist out, or sometimes force popular artists to get stuck in a stylistic rut, for fear of alienating collectors. But I have to say, the poster/gallery artists I’ve encountered in-person or online, are some of the sweetest most supportive people out there. I don’t think I’d be doing this interview without getting support and promotions from other artists online, which in this kind of business is really amazing and admirable.

BLURPPY – Did you just coin a new word?  “Collector-ability“? What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

EGAgain, I’m going to reiterate how supportive and inclusive the artists I’ve “met” have been. It’s such a great feeling to not be competing, but get propped up and listened to and helped by fellow artists. That’s definitely the best part – the spirit of community.

- Erin Gallagher

BLURPPY – I know that the Poster Posse does an amazing job supporting each other.  You are such a talented, grateful, personable group of artists, so I totally know what you are talking about.  What was your most embarrassing moment?

EGWell, that would have to be handing in just a few prints (when I promised 40) to a gallery about an hour before a show was opening (a very highly anticipated show) because the rest had been ruined in a screen printing mishap. That did not feel good. Thankfully they hung up what I gave them and let me reprint my work and hand it in a week later. Whew!

BLURPPY – OOPS!  That’s not too bad though.  If THAT is your most embarrassing experience then I would say you are doing pretty good.  What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

EGThis is my first interview! And I think the best question was “How do you keep things fresh”.

BLURPPY - Well alright then, thanks.  I will keep that one in the line up for the next round of interviews with Poster Posse Project #3. What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk  about it yet

EGI’m going to finally finish my shiny new website. I have a Mad Men-inspired print that I’ve been wanting to finish for a while, so I’m excited to get that done. I’m doing some branding for an amazing NYC hair stylist. I’ll be working on some new tee shirt designs for BQT Shirts. I’ve been working on my next pieces for Bottleneck Gallery. And I’m sure there will be more besides all that – stay tuned!

Ok, here are 10 quick questions…GO!

-DC or Marvel?
Ahhh, I grew up reading Marvel, but definitely enjoyed some of DC’s stuff when I got older. Both!

-Most Desired Super Power?
Heat vision…although I’d probably get into way too much trouble with that one. ;)

-Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?
You can’t beat Han. He’s so charming, and so sarcastic. I love that combo.

-Best movie snack?
At home I like to make my own popcorn – my new fave is with melted butter and vanilla salt. At the theater I like popcorn without butter, but with salt and M&M’s, so they get kinda melty. Mmmmm.

-Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?
I loved Thundercats, Reading Rainbow, Star Trek TNG, the Simpsons, and Batman the Animated Series. (Can you tell it’s hard for me to pick one favorite anything?)

-What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?
Since my main website is still being worked on, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr are all updated frequently. Instagram’s good too, if you also like pics of adorable cats (I have three) and the occasional food/drink pic.

-What’s your favorite pop culture event?
I enjoy going to comic cons, but I mostly stick to the artists alley – the big shows can get really overwhelming.

-Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)
Another favorite – so tough! I may have to say Buffy. She’s a pretty amazing character, and I love that they’ve kept her (and the whole Buffyverse) going in the comics. She can be super tough, but she can also be vulnerable and I love that Whedon put her (and the other Buffy characters) through the ringer with fantastical problems as well as real world problems. I have to mention another, so I’ll say Dream from the Sandman. I love his character’s arc, and his ultimate transformation through death.

-Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars?
Happy. He’s a pretty smart guy! He’ll do something interesting with it, and I think he’s fully capable of keeping it very much in the “Star Wars” universe.

-Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel?
I love Star Wars, but I’m going to have to say Blade Runner on this one. The Blade Runner aesthetic really appeals to me, and I picture having a lot of fun working on it.

So, let’s recap, what have we learned about NYC’s Erin Gallagher?  She likes to keep her work options “open“, not being pigeonholed into one thing.  She digs Olly Moss which, when it comes right down to it, is a no-brainer.  She has a strong desire to work with Pearl Jam, adores cats and loves scoundrels, specifically, Hans Solo.

Blurppy would like to thank Erin for her time on our second Poster Posse Project and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with for round 3!

Screen Shot 2013-05-30 at 9.33.56 PMMatt Needle is a designer, illustrator, art director, film and TV lover as well as the creative director for LYF, a Cardiff, UK based clothing company.  It’s safe to say he has a lot going on but amidst it all he manages to produce some fantastic art for the masses.  I got a chance to find out a little more about this man who wears many hats.  Give this a read and learn more about Matt Needle.

hugo-simplicityHugo- SimpliCITY – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

MNI’ve been creating pop culture art since 2005 (as a student). I was always inspired by film and music, and wanted a way to merge that with my other passion, design.

Screen Shot 2013-05-30 at 9.47.55 PM

BLURPPY – Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

MNI run a freelance design studio from Cardiff, UK. I work on client projects in design/art direction/ illustration on a daily basis, I also work on a lot of film posters for independent films as well as commissions and gallery pieces for exhibition.

THEY-LIVEThey Live – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – Whose work do you admire or collect?

MNI’ve always been inspired by Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Alan Fletcher, Bill Gold, Andy Warhol and Magritte. I think these are the main inspirations on my film poster work. I collect prints and books of all of them as well as many other recent artists such as Olly Moss, Jay Shaw, Kevin Tong, Tyler Stout and many others.

BLURPPY – What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

MNPretty much anything by Tyler Stout. the attention to detail and composition is outstanding.

Mondo Star Wars Screen Print Series #20 - The Original Star Wars Trilogy Set by Tyler Stout - Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi – Tyler Stout

BLURPPY – I would love to know how long it takes Stout to do something like the Return of the Jedi print.  The more you look at his work the more you see within.  I’ve been on a huge Laurent Durieux kick as well.  Another immensely talented guy who crams a TON of detail into his work. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

MNI do whatever I want. My work always boils down to displaying iconic elements or theme from a film and presenting it in a way which reflects the tone of the film.

LOOPERNEWLooper – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Exclusive, what is your dream project?

MNMy dream would to be to work for one of my favorite directors, I would love to create a piece for Wes Anderson, Chris Nolan, or David Lynch.

LIFE-AQUATIC-The Life Aquatic – Matt Needle

INCEPTIONposters-for-websiteInception – Matt Needle

MULHOLLANDMulholland DR. – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – After seeing what you have already done for some of their films I think you have a better than average shot!  Great stuff!  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

MNI would still be designing things and creating artwork in some way. I like being creative and making things, so I would still find a way to do that.  I would also like to make a film myself one day.

SUPER8Super 8 – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – What movies are you excited to see this year?

MNMan of Steel, Worlds End, Elysium, Inside Llewyn Davis, Pacific Rim, Wolverine, R.I.P.D, Sin City 2, Oldboy remake.

BLURPPY – I can’t WAIT for Man of Steel (Please be as good as we all want it to be!) and Pacific Rim looks incredible.  Guillermo del Toro is brilliant. What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

MNI am still really fond of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Print and the one I created for The Fly.

GIRL-WITH-THE-DRAGON-TATOOThe Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – Matt Needle

THE-FLYThe Fly – Matt Needle

BLURPPY – My favorite of yours is Super 8.  What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

MNThe higher ups trying to either crush creativity and/or threatening lawsuits at the same time as trying to take the minimal pop culture idea and apply it as a marketing tool.  I don’t think fan art is detrimental to a film/show I think if anything it’s a celebration and free publicity for a film that people may not have seen or heard of otherwise.

BLURPPY - I agree but unfortunately the studios see a huge boom with pop culture movie posters and the $’s it generates and they want their cut.  It doesn’t matter that a movie makes over a billion dollars, they still want that additional sliver of cheese.  I was at a lunch the other day with someone who covers movies extensively and he seems to think it is only a matter of time before studios get aggressive and start going after people who are making money off of their properties.  I HOPE that doesn’t happen because I truly love what independent artists are putting out there as opposed to what the studios have been doing. What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

MNGetting to exhibit alongside great artists in two US exhibitions in the last 6 months was pretty cool.  Also having people such as Kyle Newman and Brett Easton Ellis complementing my work was awesome

BLURPPY – Congrats!  Kind words from people you look up to and respect go a LONG way.  For me, my Mom is ALWAYS telling me how great I am but then again….she is my Mom.  What was your most embarrassing moment?

MNDrinking about 70% of the free bar at an art show in London about 5 years ago, and then having to try and sign prints afterwards whilst blind drunk. not my finest moment.

BLURPPY – What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

MNTough question, there have been some good ones here. Ummm… I was once asked to draw either a childhood dream or nightmare.

BLURPPY – YIKES!  Kinda deep for an interview and also puts you on the spot.  Not just by saying, “HEY…be creative…NOW!” but also the fact that it really gets into your head. That being said, I would love to see what you came up with. Just saying… What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”

MNI am still in the process of launching a t-shirt line with my business partner. Hopefully more exhibitions and fun film related stuff. I just worked on a huge commission to create artwork for the airport in my city which should look awesome when its up on the walls.

 Ok, 10 quick questions…..GO!

-DC or Marvel?

I am torn. I love Batman comics and the films (sans the fairly awful schumacher ones) I am also a huge Spiderman / Wolverine fan and have enjoyed a lot of the Marvel films. Iron Man 3 was great and I am looking forward to The Wolverine and the next Spiderman film as well.

-Most Desired Super Power?

I’ll let this video of Patrick Stewart cover that question…..

-Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

Boba Fett. Rad as fuck. Nuff said.

 -Best movie snack?

It used to be M&Ms but I’ve recently given up candy so that avenue of pleasure has been closed off

- Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

The Avengers (60s British spy show), The Prisoner, Man from U.N.C.L.E, Thunderbirds, Batman (60s show and 90s cartoon), Twilight Zone, Monty Python

-What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

Wade through all the bullshit cat pics and movie trailers I post on TWITTER, where I also post updates: @needledesign

 - What’s your favorite pop culture event?

Film 4 / BFI do loads of awesome screenings in the summer here in the UK including at Somerset House in London.

- Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

Probably James Bond or Indiana Jones. Both are awesome film series that I loved growing up, also made me want to travel the world more.

 - Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars?

I’ve just seen the new Star Trek here in the UK. and it is awesome so I think Star Wars is in safe hands. As long as he keeps the lens flares to a minimum and keeps the trademark dated Star Wars Scene cuts.

- Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel?

In an ideal world both, but probably the Blade Runner sequel as I know less about that and I will have a fresher pair of eyes to look over the project.

As you can see, Matt is a talented bloke with a ton of great stuff already oozing out of his portfolio.  Blurppy wants to thank Matt for his time on the second Poster Posse Project and we are excited to see what he brings to the upcoming THIRD POSTER POSSE PROJECT in early July.  Head over to his STORE and check out his WEBSITE to see even more fantastic art.

Space…the final frontier...what better topic for a show featuring some of today’s best and hottest artists?  That’s what artist Mike Mitchell thought too so he partnered with Gallery 1988 and curated this upcoming exhibit that will take us where no man has gone before. (NO IT’S NOT A STAR TREK EXHIBIT! I’m just quoting that stuff because it’s late and I’m fading fast!)

This Friday, June 21st, Gallery 1988 will open “SPACE: The Gallery Show,” a group exhibit curated by artist Mike Mitchell. The show, which will celebrate the past, present & future of space exploration and the awesomeness that is the universe, will feature over 50 amazing artists all working in many different mediums.

Screen Shot 2013-06-21 at 10.05.25 AMSachen Teng

The show will feature new artwork from out of this world artists like Mike Mitchell, Scott C., Andrew DeGraff, Olly Moss, N.C. Winters, Daniel Danger, Ken Taylor, Kevin Tong and Justin White, but also include new names to the gallery, like Jeffrey Brown, Dave Correia, John Martz and Emily Partridge. This show promises to be new, unique and memorable – and people may want to get to the gallery early for “first in line giveaways.” Screen Shot 2013-06-17 at 10.35.15 PMScott C

Wait… what?  “Giveaways?” Looks like my afternoon and evening plans just got cemented in stone.  The opening reception is THIS FRIDAY, from 7-10 PM. The night will also be hosted by Bobak Ferdowsi. Who is he you ask?  Well it’s safe to say he will be the smartest guy in the room and knows a thing or two about the exhibits topic.  Bobak is the flight director on the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission.

(FYI – All the work will then go online the next afternoon for viewing and purchase at gallery1988.com.)

Check out some of the images for the show and clear your dance card for this Friday.  Gallery 1988 has some stellar art lined up. (Sorry, had to throw that last one in there.)

Mondo Brings A Slew Of Impressive Prints To San Diego Comic Con Including New Work From Struzan, Moss, Ansin & More

Actually, that headline doesn’t even begin to describe the awesomeness that Mondo has lined up for this years San Diego Comic Con.  It’s safe to say that their Grand Slam announcement is their print for Stephen King’s Dark Tower by none other than Drew Struzan.  (I mean come on…how do you top THAT?)

Mondo

Well, they may not top it but they sure are locked and loaded with tons of impressive names and prints to follow up Mr Struzan.  Martin, Ansin, Olly Moss, Kevin Tong and Vania Zouravliov are a few that will be displaying their wares at the Mondo booth this year and there are still prints/ artists that they have stashed up their sleeves to announce at a later date.  Who can they be?  Ken Taylor, Tyler Stout, Francesco Francavilla, Jock?  Who knows but I am dying to find out.

Here is their official press release:  Mondo is excited to announce that it will return to San Diego Comic-Con 2013 with incredible new prints, including three colossal pieces of giant monster crushing artwork to celebrate the release Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’Pacific Rim from director Guillermo del Toro on July 12. The Mondo booth will be set up on the main conference floor in booth #936 throughout SDCC, Wednesday July 17 through Sunday July 21. Additionally, new prints from celebrated artists Martin Ansin, Olly Moss and Drew Struzan will be available for presale on Friday, July 12.

“Mondo has always been instrumental in cementing world creation in pop culture- these posters by Ash Thorp and Kevin Tong and Vania Zouravliov capture perfectly the wild, gleeful spirit of Pacific Rim – here’s to a mad world of Mecha and Kaiju!!” said director Guillermo del Toro.

“I love monsters. I love robots. I love Guillermo del Toro. When he asked us to do posters for a movie he was directing with both, how could we say no? G.D.T. wasn’t a bystander in the process, though. As he did in our previous director’s series, he helped hand pick the artist and gave notes on the designs. We’re all very proud to have worked on this project with him,” said Justin Ishmael CEO of Mondo.

Here is a list of Pacific Rim posters that will be available for sale on preview night, Wednesday, July 17th…when the doors open.

Good luck picking a favorite out of these because they are all incredible.  Looks like I know where I will be racing as soon as the doors open on Wednesday evening….

Now let’s take a look at what else Mondo has going on for SDCC.  This year they are doing things differently than they have in the past so for sake of clarity, and sanity I’m going to cut, copy, paste their official instructions for your benefit.

The first change is that we will be pre-selling 3 different editions of posters online before the convention. Each edition will then have a corresponding artist signing taking place upstairs away from our booth at a designated signing area. These posters will ONLY be made available to those who purchase them online in advance.

These pre-sales will all be going ON SALE this Friday, July 12, 2013 via our web-store. To repeat, these WILL NOT be available for purchase at our booth at SDCC, and the signings will not be at our booth. You will claim your posters / attend the signings at the SAILS PAVILION at the convention center (Booth AA07. It is located directly above Hall C where you claim your badges.) Since these are going to be released at the SAILS PAVILION, we have to sell them in advance. Don’t worry, though! If you miss these, we’ll still be having several releases at our booth that won’t be pre-sold.

What does this mean for me…the customer?

Believe it or not… not very much. This actually makes things quite a bit simpler. Several other companies pre-sell items before SDCC and allow for pick up. You alleviate quite a bit of stress by purchasing the item in advance and simply need to get in line to redeem your purchase. Lines will move much faster, and you won’t have to wait around all day.

The one thing you must note, however, is that these purchases are 100% NON TRANSFERABLE. You (and we mean ONLY you) will need to be absolutely, beyond certain that you will be available to pick up the poster you purchase ON THE DESIGNATED DAY.

“I couldn’t make it yesterday!” or “Can my friend / poster-buddy pick it up?” or “I have something that conflicts that day!”

Just want to put this out there now…. if you say any of the above to us at SDCC, it won’t change anything, unfortunately. This is one rule that we cannot bend or break on. If you cannot pick up your poster at the signing, we will make accommodations for it to be available until the end of the day at our actual booth (#936,) but after that you relinquish your rights to the poster, and there are NO REFUNDS. Again, if you cannot pick up the poster in person… with a valid form of ID as confirmation… DO NOT BUY ONE. The name on the ID you provide must match the name on your order to receive your poster. We will make ZERO exceptions on this.

How does picking my poster up work exactly?

All you need to do is bring a form of ID and a print-out of your order confirmation. It’s that simple. The signing time will be on your order form as a reminder (11:30AM PST). Just come find a MONDO representative at the end of the line and we will check you in. It’s that simple!

I missed the online drop! I’ll kill you, Mondo!

This is a reasonable response to have and one that we can only absolve by reminding you that we will still have at least a DOZEN additional releases over the weekend at our actual booth. Not much else has changed, sales-wise, from how we operated our releases last year, with the obvious exception of the pre-sales detailed above.

 A few other minor changes:

We will still have bags and rubber bands available for you, but we can no longer be responsible for bagging / rolling / unclipping binder-clips / etc. We apologize for any inconvenience, but this is simply an effort to keep the line flowing as smoothly and quickly as possible.

We will not be TWEETING to announce our sales. Safety is a huge concern to us and SDCC and we want everyone to be in one piece at the end. Nobody needs a broken bone to show that they’re a fan, so we’re going to have a daily schedule for you guys to check out showing times of releases. We won’t tell you what’s going to be released, but we think you’ll be happy with our releases this year. Also, a lot of media is asking to cover our stuff, so keep an eye online. I’m sure something will pop up before we can show you in line.

PHEW, that’s a lot to take in.  For updates on other things Mondo has going on at SDCC follow them on TWITTER.

Exclusive Interview: Artist Mat Weller’s Work Is As Unique As How He Spells His First Name

Screen Shot 2013-09-05 at 7.15.59 PMOk, we have another new Poster Posse member who turned in an awesome piece for our Pacific Rim project, his name… Mat Weller.  Mat is a designer from London and aside from his work showing up in our Poster Posse Project he has also been featured on the fantastic design inspiration site, Abduzeedo.

Mat-Weller-1Now that we are in between Poster Posse Projects, (the next big reveal is October 21st) we got a chance to talk to Mat and see just what makes him tick.  Sit back, kick your feet up and read along as we delve into the world of artist Mat Weller.

BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

MWI started around 2 years ago. I’d just moved to a new place in London for University and wanted to design something for my walls so started on a poster for “Drive” as it had just been released.

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 8.48.57 AMSaul Bass inspired poster for a “Drive” screening at a film festival. Capturing three scenes from the film in an abstract illustration built around the scorpion imagery from the film. – Mat Weller

BLURPPY – Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

MWI’ve only just graduated so technically I’m unemployed right now, but fingers crossed it will be a full time job soon. Ever since taking part in the Poster Posse I’ve felt my stock rising and had my work noticed by more people so everything’s looking up.

BLURPPY - Well then, mission accomplished!  Glad to hear it has helped. Whose work do you admire or collect?

MWOverall Saul Bass and Herb Lubalin are my go-to inspiration sources at all times. Within the pop culture scene though it’s hard to look past the awesome, Olly Moss. But I could also reel off 80 more names to be honest. It’s a scene rich in talent no doubt.

 Herb-Lubalin_Cooper-Union

BLURPPY – What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

MWThe awesome “Back to the Future” print by La Boca sticks out for me. The colors are insane and it’s unlike any other style out there.

backtothefuturebgBLURPPY -  Damn!  I hadn’t seen that La Boca print before, OUTSTANDING!  Thanks for the heads up. It will be added to Blurppy’s ever-growing Pinterest Poster Page for sure.  With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

MWI’ve sketched some basic concepts recently only to see other artists beat me to the punch by producing similar ideas, so it is tough. The main thing I try and do is source inspiration from lesser known works or artists outside the pop culture bubble. Try not to get too caught up in the trends and styles others are working with.

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 9.09.09 AM

BLURPPY – Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream project?

MWJust to be commissioned to design a poster for ANY film. Having a studio wanting to attach my name to their work would be awesome, even if it was just for “The Smurfs 6″. I’m also a huge fan of Little White Lies magazine so working with those guys would be a crazy achievement for me.

 Easy-Rider-Mat-Weller

BLURPPY – Uhhhhh…be careful what you wish for, ‘SMURFS 6‘ MAY give you a ring.  Little White Lies is an awesome mag.  I could absolutely see your work in there. If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

MWI’m not really there yet unfortunately. If it doesn’t pan out I’ll carry on making prints for myself and stick to freelance design work for the less exciting parts of life like plumbing companies and bakeries. I’ve also been working construction recently to pay the bills so maybe I’d end up doing that full-time without art.

 YeezusFramedBlack

Yeezus – Mat Weller

BLURPPY – A regular jack of all trades huh? Stay the course my friend, good things come to those that wait.  What movies are you excited to see this year/ next year?

MW“The Wolf of Wall Street” and the “Desolation of Smaug” are the main two for me. As for next year I’m extremely interested in what “Guardians of the Galaxy” is going to come out like. I love the original “Robocop” too so I’m cautiously excited for next year’s remake.

BLURPPY – I’m looking forward to Guardians as well but…a talking raccoon and a talking tree…I’m gonna have to catch up on the back issues to get truly excited about it. That being said, with Zoe Saldana involved it’s hard NOT to be excited about it.  What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 8.56.58 AMPoster design for the third Poster Posse Project ran over by the good guys at Blurppy.com. Artwork for the 2013 Guillermo del Toro film “Pacific Rim”. Inspired by the marketing for the 1998 similarly themed Kaiju film “Godzilla”. – Mat Weller

MWI put the most love and effort into my Pacific Rim print for the Poster Posse. Knowing I was dropping art with a bunch of crazy talented people made me step it up and put in the time. Saying that though, my favorite piece is actually one I’ve done for Hero Complex Gallery’s upcoming Jaws exhibition – “Smile, You Son Of A Bitch“, but of course I can’t show that yet so I’ll go for my second favorite which is my Raiders of the Lost Ark print. It was the first poster I really spent time on from researching the film in intricate detail to the many, many tweaks applied at the end to get it just right.

Raiders-Of-The-Lost-Ark-Mat-WellerPoster design for a film festival screening of “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark”. A favorite film of mine so it was an awesome project to work on. Probably my favorite from the whole set of 6 I did for the festival. Based on the iconic boulder chase scene from the film’s opening sequence. – Mat Weller

BLURPPY – I love the way your Pac Rim print came out. Great job and congrats on a successful first outing with the Poster Posse!  What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

MWI wasn’t such a fan of the ridiculously ÜBER minimal trend that was around a year or two ago. It’s all but died down now though thankfully. I always try and design posters that work just as well for people who haven’t seen the film as those who have. Granted, I don’t always pull it off but it’s intention nonetheless.

BLURPPY – I’ve looked at your movie prints and I would say you accomplished your initial intention on all of them.  What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

Seven-Mat-WellerPoster for a screening of David Fincher’s 1995 film, “Se7en”. I didn’t go as far as to actually illustrate Gwyneth Paltrow’s head in the box though. – Mat Weller

MWParticipating in one of BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Projects was awesome obviously. Submitting work for an exhibition at Hero Complex Gallery and being accepted is probably the thing that makes me feel best about my work to date though. But of course I wouldn’t been doing that without the Poster Posse first!

BLURPPY – You are too kind and thank you for those kind words but in the end, your work speaks for itself.  Glad we could help share it with the masses.  What was your most embarrassing moment as an artist?

MWDon’t really have one, although I guess that means I’m due one eventually. Oh boy! For the sake of entertainment I’ll make one up though… I once met Harrison Ford and told him I thought Greedo shot first.

BLURPPY – Hahahahahah… IF I ever meet the man I will steal that one for sure. What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

MWI just did an interview where I was asked what advice I had for those starting to design and produce artwork. A simple question but it allowed me to turn on the hindsight and look back at what worked for me. I said I found a real benefit in spending time to look back at the past masters of the industry and familiarize yourself with everything they’ve done in elevating the design world.

BLURPPY – What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that B.S. line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet

MWI’ve looked through the upcoming film and TV release schedule and earmarked several that I’m keen to produce work for. Hopefully more Blurppy Poster Posse work and some more for Hero Complex Gallery stuff would be awesome too.

BLURPPY – OH my friend, I have a calender FULL of Poster Posse Project for 2014 and incredibly, it keeps growing.  I have things booked out through next DECEMBER!  I will go against my OWN rule and just say, “There is a TON of great stuff coming, I just can’t talke about it yet.”  So, yes…you shall be getting MANY more Poster Posse invites!  Now, let me fire off 10 quick questions and you just say the first thing that comes to mind.

DC or Marvel?

I started heavily reading comics after DC’s New 52 refresh a couple of years back so they take it for me.

 Most Desired Super Power?

The ability to turn sobriety on and off would be cool.

Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

R2D2 for all the witty banter he dishes out to C3PO that we can’t understand but you know is hilarious.

Best movie snack?

Giant cup of icy Coca Cola.

Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

Hey Arnold! Although I’m jealous of kids today having Adventure Time.

What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

I post my stuff everywhere, whether it’s on my web site (http://matweller.me), TWITTER or INSTAGRAM or even in the MoviePosterPorn sub on Reddit. Google me (make sure you spell my name right though, with ONE “t”) and you should find me hanging around most social media sites.

What’s your favorite pop culture event?

San Diego Comic-Con. I was in San Diego back in 2007 and although I didn’t attend it, seeing all the people queuing outside the exhibition center made me realize what a big deal it is. Plus whenever I look at my RSS feeds over those few days there’s so much awesome news to digest!

Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

Maggie Simpson. I love the whole baby genius mastermind thing she’s got going on behind that pacifier. I would’ve said John McClane but with recent releases considered I just can’t do it!

Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel?

Blade Runner. Star Wars has so much artwork out there by awesome artists, whilst Blade Runner is a reasonably untapped source I think. Saying that, maybe I should do a piece for the original right now…

Huge thanks to Mat for taking the time to speak with us although, had I known how many times I would have to go back and chance MATT to MAT, I may have not used his name ANYWHERE in the article! (Oh and YES MAT, you SHOULD do a Blade Runner piece, one of my all time favorite movies and I would LOVE to see what you do with it!)

Just What IS “Campo Santo” And Why Is Olly Moss So Jovial About It?

-Campo-Santo-logoFans of artist Olly Moss saw a tweet from the gifted lad stating that he couldn’t wait till Wednesday.  Of course, everyone started scouring Mondo and other sites to see if there was an announcement about an all new, secret poster drop from the man whose TWITTER feed reads “JUST AWFUL.”  Well Wednesday came and went and not a poster from Olly to be found.  HOWEVER, it was the birth of Campo Santo, something very near and dear to his heart.

As many of his fans know, Olly is a massive video game fan.  He doesn’t hide it, he basks in it and Campo Santo is a way for him to immerse himself in that world.  Campo Santo is an all new video game studio based in San Francisco, CA.  It was started by some of the biggest names in indie gaming including …wait for it….

Mark of the ninja cover….and…..Olly Mossthe artist and graphic designer known for his work with Lucasfilm, Mondo, Sony, Studio Ghibli among many many others.  (I’m sure the suspense was KILLING you!)

olly-moss-resistance-3Here is part of what co-founder Sean Vanaman says over on the Campo Santo BLOG:

Deciding to found and then actually CREATE a video game studio has felt like a mix of buying a winning lottery ticket and taking a brash detour that results in a near miss with a pedestrian. Impulse followed by action followed by sitting in your car hyperventilating. The outcome is thrilling at best and disastrous at worst.

There are so many reasons to NOT make games; but in the interest of focus, here are two.

Firstly, games hate to be made. They really would rather not be made and once they catch wind that they might be in the process of being made they break, stall, and use all of their static inertia to produce something that’s really not fun to work on, let alone play.

Secondly, the video game business — the thing that ostensibly allows a band of quixotic programmers, artists and designers to try to wrangle the stubborn monster mentioned in my previous point — is insane. It doesn’t have a very clear understanding of its (readily apparent) nature of risk-taking the way most risk-taking lines of business do. Beyond the risk, and the way it shapes the industry ecosystem, there are very few business oriented end-games that appeal to the types of people who like making interactive experiences. Sell the company? But we’re just now successful enough to make what we want! Create a hit franchise with multi-million-dollar sequels? Come on, can’t we make something new? The Venn diagram of why businesspeople start businesses and why developers choose to make games has a strange middle, indeed.

So why are we doing this? To be honest, it’s because we think we’ve found the right group of people to make the first reason not just worth enduring but actually thrilling. As we talk to our friends and industry colleagues about “doing something indie” with us, there’s a shared pragmatism informed by years in the industry that melds with the lingering youthful enthusiasm that got us into games to begin with. Some of us want to tell stories, some of us want to build systems, and some of us want to create beautiful looking worlds, but we all want to make something. The stultifying difficulty of making a good game is instantly tempered and then squashed.

Camp Santo’s first project will be backed and made in collaboration with Mac design studio Panic Inc, who is based in Portland, Oregon.  Campo Santo has not divulged what their first project will be but you can follow them on TWITTER and check out their just-launched WEBSITE to stay in touch.  It appears the enormity of what he just embarked upon has finally caught up with Olly as he recently tweeted this….

Jock Will Be At Thought Bubble U.K. & He Is Bringing Some Dark Knight Goodies

Since 2007 The Thought Bubble Festival has been the UK’s largest event of its kind – an annual celebration of sequential art in all its forms, including everything from superhero comics to independent and small-press artists and writers.  Now even though Thought Bubble is allllll the way across the pond in Leeds, U.K. I SERIOUSLY considered buying a ticket when I head that 2 of my all-time favorite artists Olly Moss and Jock would have tables side by side!

-thought-bubble-header-2013.jpgWhat REALLY set me off is that I then heard that Jock would be offering letterpress sets of Batman images!  As you can imagine, the images are exceptional and you can see all 5 below.

-jock-batman-thought-bubbleJock will be selling 150 sets of these letterpress images and he will also have 100 separates of each image for sale.  Now I can’t IMAGINE that you would not want the whole set so my advise to YOU is that you head directly to Jock’s table #138 as soon as the doors open.  I don’t expect these to last very long.  I have already cleared a spot on my wall for these and I am beyond hopeful that my good friend and Poster Posse member, Chris Skinner, can get a set for me before they are gone, gone, GONE!

-jock-batman-letterpress

I’m hoping that Chris gets to talk Batman with Jock too as Chris has his own phenomenal Batman offering entitled Project X which we featured HERE.

-chris-skinner-batman-project-x.jpgAlso keep in mind that Dynamite Entertainment is featuring an amazing hardcover art book next year based on the work of….. Jock.  I can’t WAIT to get my hands on that as well. (Check out our article on that release HERE.)

Follow Jock on TWITTER or head over to his WEBSITE to try and grasp just how talented this artist truly is.  (It would also be nice if you kept your fingers crossed for me to hopefully get one of these letterpress sets as well! I’m gonna owe Chris a few pints if he manages to pull this one off for me!)

Exclusive Artist Interview: Linda Hordijk Wants To Design A Poster For A Major Hollywood Film Or Bake Pastries If The Art Thing Doesn’t Pan Out

$

BLURPPY EXCL TMLinda Hordijk is an artist from The Netherlands who describes herself as a “Graphic Artist, Illustrator, Movie Addict, Geek.“  I’m right there with her for 2 of the 4 but I wanted to know more about this new member to the Poster Posse so we took some time to dig deep and find out what else makes her tick.  Sit back and learn a lil’ bit about Linda.

_LH-piPi by Linda Hordijk

BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

Linda Hordijk – Can you believe it but it is just a few months! However, last year I did design a few fan art movie posters just for the fun of it, but I never thought that I would be a part of this amazing scene. I really actively started designing in the pop culture scene just a few months ago and everything since then had gone so fast. The response I have had has been truly amazing! I even got to be a part of this amazing group called the Poster Posse. Have you ever heard of them? Hahaha, just kiddin’! I really have to give a massive shout out to Adam Smasher of the Hero Complex Gallery for being the first art gallery to showcase my work. I didn’t have any experience whatsoever in exhibiting and he was (and still is) an amazing help! The Arch Nemesis showcase has really been a boost in my career, so I am forever grateful for that.

_LH-kill-billKill Bill by Linda Hordijk for Hero Complex Gallery’s Arch Nemesis Exhibit

BLURPPY – Not bad getting a Gallery gig in such a short amount of time, CONGRATS!  Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

LH – Yes and no. My full time job is graphic designer, but my main source of income this moment is still from designing graphic and motion graphic props for art departments for Dutch movies and TV series. My specialty is user interface designs. You know all those cool computer graphics on CSI? Well, that’s what I design for movies and TV shows here in the Netherlands. My latest project was a big Carlsberg commercial where I designed multiple graphics. Very cool stuff, I really love my job! But I am also very committed on creating more time on my poster design. I really love that too! I just want to do both and that’s what I am doing now. So I guess yes it is a full time job, or maybe both part time?? I don’t know… What was the question again??

BLURPPY – I’m not sure, you even have ME confused and I’m the one who ASKED the question!  Whose work do you admire or collect?

LH – I am a Saul Bass kinda girl! Love, love, love his work! My personal style is also minimalism and Saul Bass is the king in minimalism. I always say less is more. That’s why I am also a huge fan of Olly Moss. He is the Saul Bass of this generation. His work always inspires me. He creates unique designs with unique shapes. His work is very balanced. But I am also a huge fan of James White. I love watching his podcasts. It just always puts a smile on my face. And his posters are just amazing, especially his use of colors and composition. Really inspiring! Ibraheem Yousseff is also one of my favorite. There are just so many great artists out there!

_prometheusPrometheus by Ibraheem Yousseff

BLURPPY – That’s a nice diverse group.  James DEFINITELY keeps himself busy and Ibraheem’s stuff looks great too!  What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

LH – Easy: Olly Moss, An American Werewolf in London. It is just perfect! _OLLY-MOSS-an-american-werewolf-in-londonAn American Werewolf in London by Olly Moss

BLURPPY – DAMN that was fast!  Olly IS pretty friggin’ brilliant.  He has been a bit “quiet” these days with the start up of the video game company and all.  It was nice to see him release that Sightseers print with Mondo the other day. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

LH – I always try to keep myself up to date with the latest techniques and I am always looking for inspiration. Whether it’s in movies, music, fashion, art, books or even news and politics. Anything can be considered inspiration for me. But in the end I think originality comes from the heart. If it comes from the heart, it will always be fresh.

Carrie by Linda Hordijk

BLURPPY – Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Project, what is your dream project?

LH – Designing a movie poster for a Hollywood motion picture. That would be a dream!

BLURPPY – If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

LH – I would love to be a pastry chef. Wouldn’t it be great to bake pies, cakes and cookies all day? I mean, what is not to love about pastry! It looks fabulous. The taste is always pleasurable and all the pastry chefs I see are always just so happy! And isn’t the smell of melted chocolate the best scent in the world? Hmmm, getting hungry here….

_LH-marvinThis Will All End In Tears by Linda Hordijk

BLURPPY – You know what else I notice about Chefs?  Most of them are overweight!  Must be sampling the goods as they go!  What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

LH – My Marie Antoinette print. The idea just came into my head out of nowhere. Although now I see some flaws, but I still think it is one of my best in terms of concept, composition and use of colors.

_LH-marie-antoinetteMarie Antoinette by Linda Hordijk

BLURPPY – Divine intervention perhaps?  For me it’s your Tribute To Hitchcock stuff.  I found it to be very Olly Moss-ish but I loved it just the same!  Very clever, well done and yes, “less IS more!”  Plus, Rear Window is one of my all-time favorite movies so you had that going for you as well.  What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

rearwindowLH – My biggest pet peeve is about design in general. That people tend to think that you can do it all in just a couple of hours even minutes. I even had people tell me: It is not that difficult, you can design a logo in like 30 minutes, right? They just don’t know the whole process that is involved on creating a design be it a logo, or a poster. Doesn’t matter, you have to research, know your target audience, create loads of thumbnails ect.. You just don’t do it on a couple of minutes.

BLURPPY – Ignorance is bliss.  Common folk…what do THEY know right?  What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

LH – Being asked for the Poster Posse Project!

_LH-pacific-rimPacific Rim by Linda Hordijk  (A Poster Posse Project)

BLURPPY – Well THAT is very sweet of you and you have done some outstanding work for the projects that you have been part of. Now, what was your most embarrassing moment as an artist?

LH – Fortunately not one, yet….

BLURPPY – Ohhhhhh don’t worry Linda, it’s inevitable.  It’s coming.  My advice is to go with the flow, admit to the error and just move on.  What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

LH – This question. What an excellent question!

_LH-maniacManiac by Linda Hordijk

BLURPPY – HEY, that’s kinda a cop out! Well, since you have only been doing this for “a few months now” I  guess I will let it slide.  What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet

-47-ronin-linda-hordijk.jpg47 Ronin by Linda Hordijk (A Poster Posse Project)

LHPoster Posse, of course! And I also contributed to the art tribute show at the Hero Complex Gallery called: Smile, You Son of a Bitch! An Art Tribute to JAWS! Did you know I just recently saw JAWS for the first time in my life! I never had the guts to watch that movie, I am scared to death of sharks. Still am, but the movie was just awesome! Scary as hell! I am obsessed with the movie now, but I am still not over my fear of sharks. But back on the show: it is a show to help raise awareness to the global plight of sharks. I am very honored to have been a part of this amazing showcase. But other than that, I would love to collaborate with other art galleries. So to all you art galleries out there: I am available!

JAWS05Jaws by Linda Hordijk for Hero Complex Gallery’s ‘Smile You Son Of A Bitch’ Exhibit

Ok, I’m gonna ask you some quick questions and all you have to do is say the first thing that comes to mind.  Simple right?  Here we go…

DC or Marvel?

DC

Most Desired Super Power?

To fly.

Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

Jar Jar Binks. Why, because everybody hates him.

Best movie snack?

Popcorn, salt mixed with sweet. The best of both worlds!

Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

Jem and the Holograms! I mean, she had fabulous pink hair, she could sing and she drives in an awesome car!

What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

Just check out my Website or follow me on Twitter or on my Facebook page. For my Facebook page I am giving away my Marie Antoinette print for free to 1 of my followers if it reaches 100 likes. So follow me on Facebook!

What’s your favorite pop culture event?

The start of a new season of South Park.

Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

Cartman. Why? What’s not to love about that little pain in the ass.

Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel?

Oh god. Well, I am a huge fan of Blade Runner, but I really am not digging the idea of a Blade Runner prequel. Mainly because, Prometheus was such a let down. Sorry Ridley. So I guess I would pick the Star Wars movie, because I really love JJ Abrams. I never liked Star Trek, but JJ made me a Trekkie!

Screen Shot 2013-11-30 at 11.05.12 PMSeriously, Jar Jar Binks?  The only thing worse than Jar Jar are the damn Ewoks but at least they were cute!  Huge thanks to Linda for taking the time to put up with my rambling.  I am definitely looking forward to what she brings to the table for 2014′s Poster Posse Projects.  Oh and if you own a gallery….give the girl a call!

The amount of people turning out prints for HBO’s breakout hit, “True Detective” is impressive to say the least.  Olly Moss, Joshua Budich and Juan Hugo Martinez all  delivered fantastic prints based off the show. Well Francesco Francavilla has not one but TWO prints dedicated to the show and as you would expect, they are both pretty impressive.

Firewatch is a mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness, where your only emotional lifeline is the person on the other end of a handheld radio.

In Firewatch you play as a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot and dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor, a woman named Delilah, is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—and is your only contact with the world you’ve left behind.

Well, they have my interest, I’m looking forward to seeing/ hearing more. Now let’s take a look at Olly’s first print for Campo Santo by clicking the link below….
